Established in September 2006 as Finance Sudan Limited (FSL) under a program of the American Refugee Committee (ARC).  The institution focused on providing microfinance services to help improve on the lives of the returnees.

In January 2009, FSL transformed into a Company Limited by guarantee after partnering with Micro Africa Ltd (MAL), a microfinance institution with an Eastern African outreach.

FSSL is currently the largest microfinance institution in South Sudan.
